I've had to shoot in self defense before. My adrenaline was my hearing protection. I actually don't even remember hearing the shot at all, nor do I recall any ringing in my ears or any hearing loss of any type or amount. I guess the human body somehow compensates and protects us under times of duress...
So, IMHO, I wouldn't worry about wearing hearing protection while you're going about your regular daily activities "just in case" something happens. Just use hearing protection when shooting at the range.
