BART takeover robbery: 40 to 60 teens swarm train, rob weekend riders

Alicia Trost, a BART spokeswoman, said Monday that seven people were robbed; "but we obviously can’t have an officer on every car, on every platform, at every station,” Trost said. “We have 46 stations and over 100 miles of track.”"

Well if that isn't a rock solid justification for concealed carry and personal defense, I don't know what is!

With 1 extra mag and 1 in the pipe, I'm only at 31!! I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that with the group/mob mentality that was displayed by these yoots, if the need to expend any ammo in your defense arose, the first shot(s) to stop the threat would probably send the rest of them scattering like cockroaches for cover! Then again, they might get brave/stupid since they have all their homeys in tow... but I doubt it.

It's definitely a hard scenario to determine what action you may have to take! It would be very difficult IMO to make that split second decision or even try and prepare for such an incident ahead of time...

1. There's usually a multitude of innocents packed in a small space.. do you risk a close quarters shot and risk an innocent taking a hit?

2. You're on a moving vehicle that you have no control of. Do you engage the threat and risk being confronted by the rest of the mob with no way to escape them?

3. Do you have the mental and emotional capacity to keep shooting multiple aggressors if the mob turns on you?

4. Do you have the physical ability to fend off additional aggressors when your ammo is spent? Rarely does one round stop a threat immediately...

5. Do you take the risk of starting a shootout if one or more of the assailants are armed?

This is just a few things to think of and I've had the past 5 mins to know the threat, process the situation and come up with a few questions. Imagine if you had to try and process just these 5 questions in only a matter of seconds! Like I've heard many times and have even quoted myself, "When you holster that firearm and before you step out the door, you need to make a very serious decision with yourself that you are prepared to use it should the need arise!"

Just some food for thought...

Shame of this is that the proximity was to close and too many assailants to have attempted anything with a firearm just for a robbery in this situation. Had things turned deadly then all bets would be off and lethal defense would be drawn on them....

I was being facetious. It would never be wise to try to confront that may assailants alone, much less in the confined space of a train car. I agree with each of your comments.

40 to 60 teens... 7 people in the car that was robbed. That tells me that the car wasn't very crowded or the kids were in a really big hurry (makes no sense). If you have that many marauders in one car, why wouldn't they take everything from everyone (if there was more than seven passengers). Looking at it this way, I think that a few shots from anyone carrying would be more than enough to get them scrambling. Besides, if your waiting on someone else to start the defense and your sitting there armed, the other armed person might be thinking the same thing. Personally, If I was there in this situation I think (hope) I would open up on the first one that displayed a weapon and take my chances. I hope I never have to make that decision.

Why would anyone want to carry a gun? Rhetorical! :D
Trost said police arrived at the station in less than 5 minutes, but that the robberies took place in just seconds.
I'd also say that riding public transportation on a Saturday night violates the "avoid stupid places" rule. Public transportation is dangerous enough during weekday business hours.
