The early morning thieves targeted both locked and unlocked vehicles in different neighborhoods, leaving a wake of about $3,000 in damage to property.

They broke windows to get into the locked cars.

“At this point, it’s difficult to determine if all of these cases are connected,” said state police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh.

The reported property stolen included iPods, cell phone chargers, DVD players, car radios, digital cameras, computers, GPS devices, speakers and cash.

Whitmarsh said in half of the cases, the stolen property was visible from outside the vehicles which allowed thieves to pick and choose which cars to break into.

Some cars were broken into and nothing was stolen, Whitmarsh said.

Most of the incidents occurred in the parking lots of businesses.

The following locations were reportedly hit:

• Deltrans Automotive, in the 700 block of Old Baltimore Pike.

• The Zone Fitness Center, 130 Executive Drive in New Castle.

• 110 Lake Drive in Newark

• Town Hall Suites at 410 Eagle Run Road in New Castle.

• Kirkwood Fitness, at 1750 Capitol Trail in Newark.

• Borders Cafe, 483 Stanton Christiana Road in Christiana.

Police are urging the public to remove anything of value from their vehicles when leaving them unattended.

Whitmarsh said those with aftermarket radios should take precautions by removing the radio or face plate.

Never leave computers or money out in sight in the vehicles, he said.
