Though Bill O'Brien, 72, has lived in Edgemoor Gardens since 1960 and likes his home, he is thinking about packing up and moving out.

The tipping point, he said, came about 10:45 p.m. Saturday, when he heard gunfire from a shootout only a few doors past his house.

"Needless to say, it ain't what it was when I got here," O'Brien said. "It's gotten worse in the last three to four years, and I'm thinking it's about time to vacate the premises."

O'Brien, who lives there with his wife, daughter and 20-year-old granddaughter, said he was watching TV when the shootout took place on his street. The gunfire he heard concerns him even more, he said.

"It just doesn't give you much chance to get out of the way," he said.

O'Brien called 911 when he heard the gunshots, and police quickly arrived, he said.

According to New Castle County Police, two men -- one driving a gold SUV, the second a red sedan -- got out of their vehicles on South Pennewell Drive and began shooting at each other.

Then they drove away.

No one was injured but residents said at least seven vehicles and three homes were damaged by bullets.

Officers found several bullet casings on North Pennewell Drive, confirming descriptions of the incident given by witnesses, they said.

Several residents interviewed also said they heard at least 10 gunshots.

Bullets tore though one woman's white picket fence and into a car and front door. Another neighbor's Dodge mini-van had shattered windows.
